Arctic Foxes have many special physical features because of their ice-cold environment. Starting at their head, the Arctic Fox has many features that reduce heat loss, such as their ears. Their ears are smaller, rounder, and possibly less sensitive than an ordinary fox. Another heat conserving feature about the Arctic Fox is their muzzle, which is considerably smaller than the average fox's muzzle, most likely to save warmth in their frigid home.
Arctic Foxes need to stay warm in such a freezing environment, so they have really thick fur and a super bushy tail. Their winter coat is 70% thick underfur and 30% long guard hairs, so even when temperatures go below freezing the Arctic Fox stays warm. The Arctic Fox has two different coats. The white variation of the Arctic Fox will be white in the winter and brown-grayish in the summer. On the other hand, the blue variation of the Arctic Fox will be a gray throughout the entire year. |
The Arctic Fox is not a very big fox. It has about a 22 inch body, and their tail makes up approximately 12 inches of that length! In weighnt the male normally weighs around 8 lbs. The female weighs around 6 lbs. Although the Arctic Fox is not very large, it still has lots of amazing physical features.
